The empathy, intelligence, and sensitivity of the author make this an impressive book. He combines his power of observation with great ideas as in "The Physics of Flight": one example of Physics, is the fury of acceleration that lets the hummingbird chase the hawk; which, if you've ever watched a tiny hummingbird in action, is just what might happen. He has lyrical and caring verses, as in "Swan Lake", about a time with his daughter in a Swan Boat, which opens into a wonderful sailing vision of the future. There's a wide range of subjects -- bright, dark, amusing or freshly looked at -- of birds, animals, land, human interactions with nature. He closes with a beautiful meditation on what we can and can't know, our fragments of knowledge and that of other species;"it is in this way of having and not having that all are kin, sensing something of the whole, defined into each alone, living out this one audience." I strongly recommend this five star book.

Shorelines contains stunningly beautiful poetry about the natural environment and its inhabitants, be they birds, insects, people or anything in between. The author writes with such insight and passion, and the poems are deeply touching and a pleasure to read. This book gets my highest recommendation.
