This is an adolescent-targeted novel which adults can easily enjoy, much like a "Huck Finn" type of tale. As the description says, it is a tale of three brothers discovering and reading a lost journal by their great-great grandfather. The reader is then transported in time and place to that late 19th century world. The location is Alaska during the gold stampede. The author's research into the period is apparent. Elik also lived in Alaska during the 1970's. Author Jim Elik is a friend of mine and I provided him personal feedback as I worked my way through one of the first copies of his book. I read regularly and am comfortable with my ability to recognize good, or bad, writing. I'll share here essentially what I shared with Jim . . . This was Jim's first novel and I sensed that he was feeling his way early in the story. The story early-on is intact, but I thought it was a bit stiff and the characters and dialogue cliched. There was a transformation apparent about a third of... More > the way in. Elik may have been finally catching on to writing fiction or maybe, after establishing the premise, he was just getting to the big payoff Alaskan gold mining tale that he had envisioned. I went through the last half of the book reluctant to put it down after each reading. There is humor, adventure, nature and animal beauty, and an underlying thread of menace and approaching showdown. As a "critic", I also forced myself to stop and examine the writing -- the construction of thoughts, sentences, and dialogue. As I told Jim, during the last half of the book or so, it was not only adequate, but excellent. Sentences and thoughts that you enjoy looking at twice. Friendships aside, I closed the final page on this book with a smile, knowing that I had just read a beautiful story, learned some things, been entertained, and been made to think about the world and people around me. I can easily recommend this 5 star yarn from a new novelist.< Less
