I grew up with author and am just astounded that he could write a book! I never knew Jim had such highly developed writing skills, but "Only in Alaska" is not only well written, but a very good story. It has what I would describe as continous low intensity drama. Nothing explosively dramatic, but just enough to keep you on edge. Even if Jim Elik were not my good friend, I would have read this book cover to cover in just a few days time anyway. This was a part of his life I really did not know much about. But with that aside, I also did not know anything about life on the pipeline and Jim's writing vividly portrays the austere conditions and hardships those building "the pipe" had to endure. I was impressed by Jim's ability to develop his charachters and to weave them skillfully into the story. Very interesting and very educational, not to mention historically important. A real American adventure written by a real American, Jim Elik. Joel Turpin

I'll be honest - the author is a good friend of mine. But if the book was anything less than excellent, I just would have simply refrained from leaving a review. Also in the way of preface, Jim Elik is a nationally recognized artist in a specialized niche of woodcarving . . . duck decoys. His work is breathtaking to see and handle. I should have expected the same when he chose to write. He delivered. Without giving anything vital away - reading Only in Alaska puts you in the seat beside Jim as he packs up his family in the truck and heads for Alaska to work the pipeline during the 70's oil boom. The adventure turns out to be everything you hope it might. The overwhelming vistas, the frontier-like spirit, coping with work and family in minus 50 degree temeratures, a wilderness bear hunt, huge risk-taking. Throughout, the author peppers the tale with his people observations, his frustrations and worries, and his love for Alaska as he transitioned from outsider to insider. Jim Elik is a... More > gentle man, but strong inside, brave, and an unusually keen observer and evaluator of people and surroundings. The frequent and subtle humor in the book also reveals him to be a pretty fair wit. I started Only in Alaska out of a bit of curiosity, and a sense of duty to a friend. It starts a bit stiff. Jim had warned me of this. He was a new author and feeling his way. He caught on quickly. I was soon looking forward anxiously to my nightly bedtime session "in Alaska" and saw with sorrow that the pages were dwindling as I neared the end. Jim wrote this for his family -- he thought. As it turns out, he wrote it for all of us. You'll enjoy this one.< Less
