I am a distant cousin of Leon Milton Birkhead. I discovered him on, while doing my family tree. The 1940 Census listed his occupation as "Friends of Democracy" in New York. So I Googled everything about him on the Internet. I had intended to drive to Kansas City and review the collection of his papers. After reading this really good book about him, I no longer feel I need to make the trip. The book is comprehensive about his life, his work, his ethics and values. It also includes criticism of him by other public figures of his time, in a fair and straight forward manner. I really recommend this book to others. It not only chronicles the life of Leon Birkhead, but chronicles the happenings in America and overseas during his lifetime. It should be required reading for college American history and/or sociology classes.
