Third installation in the annual series is an absolute must-read for White Sox fans If you are a White Sox fan who is seeking a good, objectively written, in-depth analysis of the team, I only have one recommendation for you: buy a copy of “White Sox Outsider 2011”. This is the third year that Jim has written a White Sox Outsider volume, and his writing just keeps getting better with time: it is crisper, funnier, and his knowledge of the team and the minor league system is even deeper. It is amazing to realize that following the White Sox from afar is essentially a second job and a labor of love for Margalus, although he should be making some money by now from his books and web postings. The White Sox beat reporters from the Tribune and Sun-Times do not publish an annual volume about the team like Jim does, and I think if they did, Jim’s would be better. I have followed Jim Margalus from his now dormant “Sox Machine” and “State of the Sox 2010” web sites over to “South Side Sox”,... More > where he is Managing Editor and a primary contributor of game summaries and insightful articles analyzing the strengths and flaws of all aspects of the team. I find myself reading South Side Sox more often than the so-called “mainstream media” sites, as the postings of Jim and the other contributors and fans on South Side Sox go into much more depth than the mainstream media. Perhaps South Side Sox, part of SB Nation, will someday displace the mainstream media, and Jim won’t have to join the Tribune Company, for example - it will be interesting to see. Jim Margalus’s short summary of the 2011 season is that it is essentially a “do over” of the 2010 season, in which the Sox started incredibly slowly, turned it on when the weather heated up and interleague play started, and ended up finishing short of the AL Central title, with the main flaw thought to be the lack of production from the DH spot. With the early-season struggles of Adam Dunn and most of the rest of the 2010 roster returning, so far 2011 is turning out to be exactly the same as 2010. Here’s hoping that Dunn gets going and that the Sox finish the rest of the 2011 season even better than they did in 2010 (a tall order, to be sure, but possible). Meanwhile, for fans looking for more in-depth analysis on the 2011 White Sox, you absolutely should read Jim Margalus’s “White Sox Outsider 2011”.< Less
