The Blackthorn Anthology is an exquisite collection of poetry and prose that expresses quite vividly the author’s love of Ireland, its people, its traditions and its culture, and the pain he went through after having to leave the country. There is sadness and joy, humour and tenderness within the works, interlaced with a fine appreciation of Ireland’s history and of legends gone before. The reader cannot fail to be touched by Jim Scallan’s emotion and love for the country, as he succeeds in capturing the mystical Gaelic essence as one might capture a fairy in a jar.

"The Blackthorn Anthology" Jim has produced a book which has a little something for every reader. His writing has a wonderfully descriptive quality which places the reader right at the centre of his poetic surroundings as if the reader was a part of them themselves. This book holds you captivated from beginning to end. Guiding you through his love of Ireland, his yearnings, his melancholy, his fondest memories and his beautiful surroundings, but also through day to day observations of people, life, luck and misfortune, the funny, the sad, you name it it's all in there. This is a book that I would gladly recommend to everyone I know. Jim has a wonderful grasp of the poetic language, and his work is a true inspiration. He shows great insight into the histories of his surroundings also; which enriches the work all the more. He captures character types to perfection in all situations and scenes. It is a welcoming glimpse into his life experiences and a truly uplifting read. A... More > book to be read often and cherished, highly recommended!< Less

"The Blackthorn Anthology " Jim Scallan has a rare talent as a gifted poet. He is comfortable within the genre of warm descriptive poetry and equally talented in the delivery of first class comedy. Jim's poetry is from the heart, and this is demonstrated in a poetic yearning for his beloved Ireland. This is made all the more poignant by his knowledge of the country and the ever present charm with which he portrays his feelings. Jims poetry places you inside his cocoon, and allows you to share the melody and poignancy of his words. Enjoy the delightful journey of his memories as he shares with you the thoughts and reminiscences of Jim Scallan the man, and his poetry.
