"The New Jamey Hart Adventure" Based in Saint Steven, South Carolina in the mid-1950’s, Jimmy Beard’s Ghosts of Saint Steven is a tale of murder, ghosts and the classic conflict between good and evil. The book is the second installment in the series of adventures about the precocious sixteen-year-old Jamey Hart. A connection with a helpful spirit allows Jamey to assist local authorities in resolving several unsolved cases. The Low country backdrop adds texture to this multi-layered story. Jamey, his mother and brother move to Saint Steven to start a new life with his step-father Shorty. Soon after the move, Jamey has several dreams about his deceased friend, Miss Lucy. She provides Jamey with information about two murders and keeps the teen safe as he enters and exits dangerous situations. Jamey is introduced in Beard’s first book Colson Creek. He is a mature, compassionate character who works hard and displays a deep concern for his fellow man. Even though he is... More > frequently uncomfortable relaying the facts that Miss Lucy offers in his dreams, he complies with her instructions: “Do not be afraid of what you know in your heart to be right…” His efforts save lives and catch a killer. Jamey’s involvement in resolving a cold case comes to the attention of Chandler Rivers, one of the richest men in Cypress County. Rivers, who is also visited by ghosts, becomes obsessed with killing the teenager. Beard’s novel includes mini-dramas stuffed between the layers of the main tale that feature a young girl with a rare illness, a kidnapped infant, and a mother and son hiding from the mob. The multiple plots make the book somewhat busy, but the author successfully ties them all together. There is also a bit of clumsiness in how Beard informs the reader of Jamey’s previous life in the Colson Creek novel. Even so, Beard’s potential to become a master story-teller is apparent. Ghosts of Saint Steven is an action packed adventure that also highlights basic human goodness. The book will appeal to young and older adults and is a strong foundation for the continuing Jamey Hart series. Melissa Levine For Independent Professional Book Reviewers< Less
