In the 1970s crime was rampant in the northwest section Lake County Indiana, murders, drugs, gambling and prostution were in evidence everywhere. Gary, Lake County's biggest city had been reported in the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Report, as the murder capital of the United States. More people were murdered in Gary, percentage wise, then in any other city in the United States. If these statistics, along with the reported drug stats, were accurately gathered, Gary also was one of the largest drug distribution centers in the Midwest. The Family Street Gang, composed of black drug dealers, thieves and killers, with its ruthlessness, got its foot in the door and took control of Gary and its streets.
This story is about two black kids who were raised in Gary during this period of time. Drug dealers and prostitutes were their role models and teachers. It tells of their lives and their downward spiral into drug dealing, murder, and prison.

I had to start reading this one a second time. It is a "smash mouth" description of life that you pray could never happen. Worse yet, it gives a reader a glimpse of what the author was witness to for too long. If you are a student of the history of Northwest Indiana, you will need this story to complete your journey. The author was clearly pulling for the "underdog" when he conceived the "O.Henry" twist at the tale. Dave Casbon
"This Jail is black" My husband and I both read this book and found it very interesting because we were brought up in the Gary area. I have encouraged several people to read it, especially if you are from the Gary area. Good work, Jim!!!
