Gra Im Thu! I Love You!
Two Irish families, with very different belief systems in the areas of religion and politics, both immigrate to Utah and meet there in the mid-1900s. They find themselves wanting to intermarry. But their diversity of thought poses problems. They develop a method to overcome conflict and build harmony in their relationships, and learn to eat peacefully around the table. At that table is Teague Gwynn, a thirteen year old boy, who intuitively knows that diversity and harmony can exist together in the same house!

Dec 29, 2013When I started to read this book I couldn't put it down, I finally had to stop because I couldn't keep my eyes open, then when I got up in the morning I had to continue to read until I was done, it was so good. As I continued to read, I really got to know each character and I tried to imagine how each one of them looked. The O'Gradys and Gwynns showed us how a family can come together regardless of religious beliefs when 2 people fall in love. Wonderful 1st novel for Joan Claire Gordon, can't wait for the next part of the story.
Mar 17, 2013This book is a charming history of the harmonious blending of two religions through marriage when the partners are of different faiths. In an addendum to the book, the author admits to being a great believer in “breeding harmony through societal tolerance.” Indeed, this is a story of just that! She tells a tale of two families whose heritage springs from Ireland They meet in Utah with two very different religious perspectives. The pleasure of this book is the author’s ability to tell a straightforward story with clarity and poignant observations. The two Irish families come from very diverse backgrounds—one a definite contender for the lifestyle of Downton Abbey aristocrats. But in spite of some serious religious and political issues the two families are able to put together an existence infused with kindness. The characters in this story are focused on moving ahead by getting things done and they do so using a social entrepreneurship that is a touchstone today but was definitely not... There is most certainly a very romantic storyline here but also one of hardline politics, religious uncertainties, childhood adoption, and the fear of leaving behind all that is familiar to try and build something new. It is a wonderful story that recommends itself particularly to young people who may themselves be struggling with conflicting points-of-view.< Less
Mar 8, 2013This is a great novel about two Irish immigrant families in Salt Lake City at the turn of the century. One family is Catholic, the other new converts to Mormonism. The novel deals with how two teens from these families fall in love, marry and learn to work out the cultural, religious and intergenerational differences between their families. A really fun first novel with lots of interesting historical details about Salt Lake City.
Jan 28, 2013“Gra Im Thu! I Love You!” was a fun read! I really looked forward to jumping into bed and reading this sweet story every night! It is a story of a young couple who fall in love and overcome the disapproval of certain traditional and religious family members. Many of the characters are great role models! But, in particular, I really liked that Regina and Roderick kept on track with their personal goals, their goals as a couple, their separate and merged religious beliefs and with their love for each other. They both displayed good, positive self-esteem never doubting what they wanted. It’s nice to see heroes being so young. It is a good lesson for all of us, to just plain lighten up, and to try just a little harder to get along. I can’t wait for the next story! Great job with your first novel!
