The purpose of this study was to understand how yoga and psychotherapy combined enhances mental health and well-being. Eight participants were interviewed using a qualitative design. Fifteen themes emerged comprising of eight major themes, three minor themes, and four additional themes. The major themes were: expanded physical awareness and mind-body connection; greater acceptance and relationship to self; a sense of calm and feeling grounded; feeling more relaxed; introspection through reflection; a shift in perspective/openness to change; sense of strength; greater tolerance and patience; stillness. Minor themes were: healing and recovery; a sense of purpose and direction; spiritual connection. The additional themes were: hope; engagement; empathy, enhanced communication. This research provided evidence not only that yoga practice complements psychotherapy, but demystifies the process as conveyed by the reports and expressions of positive change and growth.
