A Handicap is a charge added to the saddle of a jockey to equalize the chances of all the jockeys. Without that charge , a race among the jockeys will lead easily to an absurd: there will be a race of children of midgets. Handicap, i.e. an added charge, has stopped this race to minimize the jockey’s weight. It means that we agree consciously to compete while charged with a superfluous but necessary ballast. How can we check if the marketing is not cheating? The only certain method is to charge an individual promoting himself with such a weight, so that any non-honest activity would cost him much too much. For example a male peacock is promoting his genes showing that he can afford keeping a very expensive and troublesome tale. A male lion is promoting his health (so indirectly also his genotype) carrying about his unnecessary and bearing no apparent use, big and heating mane in 40C temperature. We are a part of nature. It is more and more often revealed that our excessive ideas about... More > he superiority of civilization over the nature are only illusions. The handicap theory, discovered by the biologist Amotz Zahavi for the world of animals, explaining easily strange effects of evolution, explains also perfectly a number of strange behaviors of business. This book is really worth reading.< Less
