Jody McBrien has provided an open and intelligent review on the subject of refugees in the US that should be required reading in all schools for students and teachers alike. She directly confronts the lack of awareness and understanding of the true nature of the plight of people who of necessity flee their homelands and struggle with their placement in our society. The photography project which was conducted and beautifully exhibited both in studios and in this book, not only gave the young participants an opportunity to learn to use cameras to express their experiences and insights, but the interviews and statements about their lives and their photographs revealed maturity and insightfulness that is not normally forthcoming from children. I was fortunate to see the live exhibit in St. Petersburg, Florida; it was a very impressive and moving experience, and Jody McBrien has done a wonderful job in addressing this timely and timeless subject.
