Oct 1, 2008"Photograph" This was our favorite in the book. Most of the poems are of personal interest, journaling the growth of his relationship. "Photograph" was different. The resonance is there, there is a quiet movement to the words, alliteration in the repetition of the 'r' and 'w'sounds. These sounds match the image created; the wind whistling by the open window of the moving car. A common experience, shared by the author and the reader. There is a sense of place conveyed, coming down from the mountain into a red landscape. Sunset or the west? Not important. The reader can connect either way. The wet feet are a striking image; a commonplace thing now indued with depth; they are the feet of an angel, the reader knows; because they have touched only the sky, the clouds and the rain. They do not touch the earth. What is the monsoon? Literal rain, orthe deluge of events and emotions? Once again, the words are a sketch the reader can fill. A wonderful image. This poem... Jan 13, 2008Joel Pedersen is The most insightful poet since Billy Collins. His understanding of all things understood is brilliant; completely brilliant! I would suggest buying many of these books! Don't show them to your wife, though. If you show this book to your wife, she might wonder WHY you're not writing HER poetry "like Mr. Pedersen did with his georgeous girlfriend?" I love this book. It is as if angels crafted Joel Pedersen entirely out of lightly toasted almonds and sprinkled it on a heavenly salad; devouring every tasty morsel with delight and utter satisfaction. There has never been a man more clever than Joel Pedersen, and there likely never will be again. This book will one day be looked upon as a literary equivelent to The Mona Lisa or the shoe-horn. It is a collector's fantasy and should be purchased in large quantities and stored in a cool dry place. Probably the best thing about this book is the fact that Joel has no sense of rhythm. He is a free-spirited, childlike... More > individual wo doesn't take "no" for an answer. He isn't confined by the guidelines and rules of poetry because- get this, folks- Joel IS poetry. Right down to the way he chews his food or forgets to finish his sentances. Joel Pedersen is an artist in the purest sense of the word. Joel is definately one of the grandfathers of lyric poetry. PLUS he has a really cute birthmark.< Less
Mar 23, 2007"From LitKicks Ezine" Something Akin to Poetry is an amazingly innocent (or perhaps faux niav) poetry chapbook by Joel Pedersen.... His pieces are simple, clear and funny in a deadpan Bukowski way, and they're almost all about giddy love.... I see the poetry. You will too...
