I found this book heart warming and touching. The simplicity of the writing style brought the unworldliness of the children alive and made me appreciate their shock more intensely. The unassuming attitude that this story is not just worthwhile but needs to be told for the whole community pervades the whole story. It was interesting to read text from so many survivors about the impact this event had on the whole community and also how it shaped their lives. I was also struck by the inclusion of details of Queen Elizabeth. She made a visit to the school following the event and she has continued to respond to Mr Burns when he has written to her. There is no evidence of negativity, of "why me?". The overwhelming message I took from this book, is that the author has turned a disaster into an opportunity to give something back to his homeland. I am pleased that I have read this account and I think that John Burns must be an inspiration to those who know him.
