OK. So you are not Cherokee. Or, are you? Many families in the US are tied to the Cherokee Nation. I had no idea that I was because my mother's family had thrown this information aside. My research into my mother's family uncovered my tie to the Cherokee Nation East, and to two prominent families, the Buffington family and the Fields family. I would guess that 1/2 of you have native American ancestors. It takes a lot of work to figure out just who your ancestors really are. After years of work, in my essay I place my 4th great-gradmother, Missouri Buffington, into the Cherokee Nation as well as into the Buffington and Fields families prior to the 1838 "Trail of Tears". Because the Cherokee who stayed in the east often did so with the total commitment to denying their native American heritage, discovery of family roots is often difficult if not impossible. Read this essay and you will better understand what it meant to belong to this group (as well you might) that decided to... More > try it on their own at a period where Cherokee, and other American indians, were not treated with the respect that they deserved as the owners and developers of America in southeastern US. Their culture, though mostly forgotten, deserves your review. John Clinard, Christmas 2010< Less
