Emily Bay is a real and beautiful place on Norfolk island in the South Pacific. At the turn of the nineteenth century the island was being used by the British Empire as the Guantanamo Bay of its day - a terrible escape-proof penal colony.
Although this book is a work of fiction, it is set against a backdrop of real events. It tells the story of the political radicalisation of a farmer's son, and his love for the beautiful daughter of a Lincolnshire landowner.
