This easy-reading adventure tells about the writer’s science-based approach to gold prospecting. The book contains historical details of the origins of gold mining in far-flung parts of Australia, Africa, and North and South America. For each of these areas, it also relates the author’s personal experiences with these varied cultures while prospecting the areas in the 1970s and into the 1980s. The cover notes explain that the writer was unaware of his mental illness. Nevertheless, the book is so convincingly written that I occasionally caught myself believing that the writer might have been dealing with real rogues trying to steal the results of his significant mineral finds instead of avoiding imaginary political spies. In summary, this was an extraordinary book different from any other I have read. With all his problems, I found the author’s book to be a fascinating record of his troubled but talented and creative life.

An interesting and very easy-reading autobiography. The travels of the author in search of gold and silver makes it read more like an adventure novel than an autobiography. The detail on the locations and cultures he experiences provided insight into the historical events and situations in South Africa, South America and Australia in the 1960s and 1970s. The authors mental illness is apparent only through his continuing belief that he was being followed and monitored by government agents and appeared to drive his unwillingness to stay in any one place for very long. Treasure hunters and amateur prospectors may find this as much a guidebook as an autobiography. I was left with the feeling that he may have had much more success in finding gold and treasure if his paranoia had not cut short many of his most promising searches. Overall a very professionally done as well interesting book.
