For anyone with an interest in Universities and Education this book is a wonderful read. It is very accessible without sacrificing the complexity of the challenging issues Biggs confronts. I loved it and read it as bedtime reading. I was entertained by the personal stories of events and battles and enjoyed the insights into the conversations and encounters that lead to Bigs development of theoretical ideas that are used and shared today. Universities have changed so much from the time that Biggs begins the narrative, yet as the reader follows the details of so many of his experiences, especially the challenge of remaining true to personal values regarding the role of academics in teaching and research, one begins to think that really nothing has changed. Biggs story is about education, researching education and the ways that Universities have treated or maltreated this relationship over time and in different locations. His story is also about the ways that personal, and sometime... More > petty, foibles and biases have undermined the best that Universities and academics can be. I particularly enjoyed the last chapters when, the narrative over, Biggs reflects on current times.< Less

What an interesting read! John Biggs's story as an academic in different universities and countries is inspirational, finding himself in the odd position of too often having to fight his senior colleagues in order to do his job properly as teacher and researcher. But this is no dull academic text. Biggs writes very clearly and interestingly. Some of the situations in which he finds himself are screamingly funny but others are not funny at all. But he survives, emerging in the end as one of the leading researchers into student learning and university teaching. Universities have changed since Biggs's time. Now they are much less fun as he tells us in his long last chapter.
