"Hinckly Hollow" This enchanting book has all the animals of hedgerow and forest, from mouse to deer they are all in this wonderful story. It tells of the animals having to unite against the dreaded uprites (humans) who intend to flood their homeland forest turning it into a freshwater dam. The animals however, have other ideas and so begins a war against the humans. If you liked The Wind in the Willows you'll love this. I can't wait for the follow-up.

"Hinckly Hollow" The book lay on the table waiting for a free moment to begin reading it. I’d already browsed through the fascinating illustrations, drawn by the author, and my first thought was "Hey - this is not just rabbits, this is ALL the animals." But I had to wait - my wife got to it first and I had to wait my turn. She’s a fast reader and read it at one sitting, giving it back to me with the comment - "You’ll love this, the action never stops and every animal character reminded me of someone I know!" My response was "Don’t tell me any more, let me see for myself." but I had another wait - my neighbour next door was visiting to remind me that the travelling library to our village was about to arrive. (I generally get around 8 books once per two-weekly visit. Neighbour Ron spotted the book and immediately demanded to borrow it. Next day I called on him for our regular chat over a cup of tea and he commented; "I won’t be too long... More > letting you have it back, I can’t put it down - the leading animal in the story is a real character - reminds me of you when you get a bee in your bonnet!" I’m 74 and a lifelong biker and he’s 78 and used to be an engine driver on our national railway system. We are both ex-servicemen (R.A.F. and Army) and have allied interests but when one is our age a lot of relaxing is done and reading is the main one. It takes a lot to get Ron fired up, having seen it all in his life, but he really enthused about the story and the characters. "Don’t tell me any more Ron - let me enjoy it for myself!" and I waited for him to let me have it back. A couple of days later I took it to bed with me - and what a short night it was! I live in a very UK country environment and we are surrounded by all kinds of animals - farm, domestic pets and wildlife. My, how this author knows them all and weaves them into believable characters in their own right! It’s all there - the tragedy of human activity that takes no account of the rights of other life we share this planetary home with. The interaction between the wild life-forms transposed in a way that equates with how we interact with each other - from one-to-one relationships through to all-out war! Everything is there: imminent danger, tragedy, love, terror, rescue, sadness, joy, happy ending. I won’t spoil it for anyone else by going into story details, there is enough in the author’s resume to do that - but I predict that if Walt Disney gets first crack at an animated film version it will be another blockbuster movie! Highly recommended for all age groups by us geriatrics who are used to adventure (been there, done that!) and a book for every member of the extended family. Thank you author John Claypole - a great tale, a great read - more, more! (Whoever heard of a fox that went around "kicking ass"?! Well, he sure reminded me of Churchill and Eisenhower.)
