Trade paperback. 'Murder In Shawnee' collects John Douglas’ two Detective Harter mysteries, 'Shawnee Alley Fire' and 'Haunts.' Shawnee may look like a small mountain city where nothing much takes place, but, as Edward Harter knows, anything can happen. As Harter works to solve his baffling cases, you’ll walk the streets and ride the back roads with him. You’ll visit all sorts of people and places in a recession-hit railroading city in the Alleghenies — a city inspired by Cumberland, Maryland, and the surrounding region of western Maryland, northeast West Virginia and southwest Pennsylvania.

"Cumberland, Here I Come!" As I read these two mysteries that take place in the fictitious town of Shawnee (Cumberland MD) I felt I was actually there, even though I'd never been to that part of the country before. John Douglas has described the town in such detail that I could see it, almost as well as I see the hometown of my youth, Farmington NM. The characters seem real and remind me of the people I grew up with -- except for the odd murder, of course. So many towns are being threatened by economic factors these days, I have a feeling that most of us will see ourselves and our hometowns in the two well-plotted stories. John has a reporter's eye and a storyteller's style and if you missed these two books back in the 80s, here's your chance to read the whole Allegheny saga in one volume. Highly recommended, especially if you're going to be visiting the area any time soon. It may not be there too much longer.
