Barbary Rovers by John Finnemore, first published in 1912. This book gives a short but fascinating history of the Barbary pirates from the time the Moors were driven from Spain in 1492 until the overthrow of Algeria by France in the late 1800's. For nearly four hundred years, the Barbary pirates were the terror of the Mediterranean and took thousands of Christian European captives. The story of their depredations is both tragic and entertaining. Once the United States split from Britain, its ships were no longer protected by British tribute. Instead of agreeing to pay a corrupt ransom to robber pirates, however, the young republic took matters into their own hands. It was the Americans, therefore, who after hundreds of years of shameful tolerance by European powers, put an end to the Barbary pirates. The Barbary Wars of the early 19th century were a great source of pride to Americans, not only because they defeated a nefarious band of sea-robbers, but because they stood on principle.
