The author, John H. Brown, was English-born. He lived among the Cherokees, and in 1843, set out for the west coast. In this work, he describes his time spent at Sutter's Fort before moving to San Francisco, where he became a saloon keeper and hotel keeper. He describes San Francisco's people, the discovery of gold, business patterns of the area and also includes sketches of gamblers, gangs, miners and more. This publication, originally printed in 1886, also contains a map showing San Francisco's building lots and their occupants during this early period.
