I finished reading "Surprising Stories" in an afternoon, and I must warn that these stories are not for the faint of heart. They are a collection of tales that have been collected over time which describe the darker side of humanity. These are horror stories and I give it 5 stars because I've never read another horror anthology which left me feeling so shocked, scared, and well....horrified! The stories are quite graphic, and some of them are quite sexual, so if you can't stomach that, then you should probably look elsewhere. However, if you are looking for a collection of horror stories, perhaps/perhaps not based on truth, then this book is for you. The author is very vague about his sources, naturally, if the stories were told in confidence, he would have to protect their anonymity. John Hansen is a gifted writer. Its very difficult to write short stories, and especially to write short tales that evoke such strong emotions. Horror is also quite a difficult genre to master,... More > as its easy to go overboard and come off just cheesy. Although I must admit, horror stories are not really my first choice of reading material, I found myself absolutely captivated by his writing and found that I couldn't stop myself from reading more! Because of Mr. Hansen's gift of storytelling, I intend to read more of his anthologies, and will continue to post my reviews as I finish reading them.< Less
