John Henry Newman was one of the most influential figures of 19th Century Religion. Originally a Church of England priest, Newman converted to Catholicism in 1845, eventually rising to become a Cardinal. The Apologia Pro Vita Sua, (A Defence of One’s Life), is his Autobiography. Following an unwarranted attack on his opinions, Newman retaliated against his main critic Mr Kingsley with the now famous work. The book was a bestseller in its day, and is still extremely popular. Newman was an extremely learned, and his Autobiography makes reference to many contempory and classical works of the period. He was also one of the most prolific religious writers of his day and his influence still lives on to this day.
