"Great Hollywood Westerns" A 221-page, large-format book with 50 wonderful illustrations of vintage lobby cards and one-sheet posters, this book rates and reviews classic western movies from some of my favorite stars, including Gene Autry, Ken Maynard, Buck Jones, Hoot Gibson and Charles Starrett. They are the top five in my opinion, but I also like Tim McCoy, Bill Boyd, Johnny Mack Brown, Tex Ritter, Randolph Scott, Bob Steele, Jack Perrin, John Wayne and Roy Rogers. All of them have movies in the book. In fact, no fewer than sixteen Gene Autry features are detailed (with complete cast and technical credits) including the remarkable "Riders of the Whistling Pines" and the absolute must-see "Yodelin' Kid from Pine Ridge" which, despite its somewhat off-putting title, shapes up as one of Gene's most vibrant and exciting Republic entries. Of the twenty Charles Starrett features covered in the book, one of my favorites is the action-packed "West of Dodge City" which also has an edge in the fine performance contributed by cult director Fred F.
