"A page-turning, suspenseful thriller that's guaranteed to satisfy!" Book 3 in the Merryll Manning series, Beachfront “Holiday” takes place approximately 10 years after Merryll Manning: The Health Farm Murders. Written in the first person, like the first two books in the series, readers will swiftly be pulled into the story and experience the emotional ups and downs along with the characters. Merryll Manning is quickly thrown into a murder investigation, that for once, he feels ill-equipped to deal with. The loss of yet another life at the hands of some crazed killer is doubly hard on him to process this time; it’s just too close to home. Working alongside local law enforcement officers, Merryll questions suspects, looks for answers and secretly keeps information hidden from the authorities. Focusing on the task at hand has never been more difficult for Merryll as he works to clear his name and catch the real killer before they can strike again. This story moves quickly and... More > keeps readers on their toes with well-written, fast-paced action and some startling, grisly scenes. Another, very highly recommend novel from the award-wining author, John Howard Reid. Merryll returns in Merryll Manning: Beachfront Holiday! However, this one is no vacation as Merryll’s former girlfriend turns up dead in her beachfront condo. He’ll need to be at his best to clear his name and catch a killer in the best Manning mystery yet. When Susan Alexis Devoro Ford broke off her tumultuous relationship with Manning, he took a leave-of-absence from the Miami Police Department and followed her, first to Atlantic City and then to Australia to try and win her back. He even moved into the same building six floors up from Ford at the Beachfront Condominiums near Sydney. This wasn’t a problem until Ford was strangled and the fact of Merryll’s “following” her instantly put him at the top of the suspects list. It isn’t long before complications arise, as the murder’s only potential witness, the peculiar Mrs. Erwin, disappears. Despite the fact that local police Inspector Frank Hyland began the case suspecting Merryll, Hyland enlists Merryll to lead up the investigation... More > and teams him up with the hopeless Detective-Sergeant Vic Jarrett. In truth, Merryll isn’t surprised that Susan was murdered. She had a talent for targeting vulnerable men and using her sexuality to extract whatever she could from them, and when she was finished she dropped them fast…as she had with Merryll. Inspector Hyland dispatches Merryll to Susan’s hometown to piece together her life before she went to America in hopes of flushing out the killer. Author John Howard Reid treats his fans to a first-rate mystery here. He keeps us guessing until the end and turns up the suspense in the final pages as the killer resorts to a dangerous plan to escape arrest. Merryll’s unconventional behaviour, humor, and sarcasm are in classic form when dealing with the inept local cops and the eclectic group of nosy neighbors at the condo. There are no gory crime scenes, pointless violence, or gratuitous sex here. Just enjoyable mystery fiction on every page. I highly recommend Beachfront Holiday and I look forward to the next in the series: Merryll Manning on the Rim of Heaven. The Merryll Manning mysteries are a 12-part series originally published between 1985 and 2001. Reviewed by William Potter for Reader’s Choice Book Reviews< Less

Merryll Manning lives six floors up from Susan Ford at a condominium in Australia. Currently Merryll is on a leave of absence from his police job with the D.A. in Miami. Susan Ford may be a hard-nosed vixen but Merryll is still in love with her and had followed her to Beachfront in the hopes of winning her back, she being his whole purpose in life. When Susan is found strangled to death in her Beachfront condo by her neighbor, Mrs. Erwin, Merryll's world is turned upside down. It's bad enough he lost the love of his life but he also finds himself under suspicion by the local inspectors. Even though Merryll is their prime suspect the local inspectors enlist his help in the investigation and he is paired up with Inspector Jarrett whom Merryll finds to be totally useless. The case soon becomes more complicated when the eccentric Mrs. Erwin, the only witness to Susan's murder, goes missing. It is now up to Merryll to put the pieces of this puzzle together before there are any more mishaps... More > at the condominium Beachfront. John Howard Reid has a unique and very entertaining "voice". His characters are vividly drawn and the dialogue sparkles. Merryll Manning: Beachfront "Holiday" is an intriguing and immensely entertaining story to read.< Less
