"A Wide Field of Exceptional Movie Classics" Film noir is represented by both famous and little-known titles. In the former category, I've selected "Ace in the Hole" (or "The Big Carnival" as it was re-titled), "Act of Violence", "After the Thin Man" (in addition to its well-paced comic elements, the film features a noirishly chilling portrayal of the murderer), "Among the Living", "Angel Face", "Black Angel", "Blood on the Moon" (a spine-tingling noir western), "Bullets or Ballots" (some fans will be disappointed by the movie's downbeat ending, but who said that a film noir has to end happily), "Confidential Agent" (a noir spy movie, based on a novel by Graham Greene, with Charles Boyer as the unwilling spy), "Crisis", "The High Wall" (more an eerie psychological thriller, in my opinion, but Alain Silver and Elizabeth Ward examine the film in detail in... More > their book on "Film Noir" and I'm certainly not to argue with them), "His Kind of Woman", "House of Strangers", "I Was a Communist for the F.B.I.", "Johnny Allegro" (I don't know how Silver and Ward managed to miss this one, but "Johnny Allegro" is a true film noir in every sense of the word, particularly in its darkly byzantine plot, its laconic hero struggling against all odds to find a fatal weakness in the misaligned conspiracy that covets his life and liberty, its brooding atmosphere and richly layered camerawork), "The Man with a Cloak" (Silver and Ward omit this one too, perhaps because it's a period piece, but who said a film noir has to be contemporary), "The Mark of Cain" (another period noir), "My Forbidden Past" (period again), "My Name Is Julia Ross", "O.S.S." (spies), "To Have and Have Not" (unaccountably omitted by Silver and Ward, although its re-make is discussed at length), and "Union Station". And that's just part of the film noir component of "Movie Mystery & Suspense"! Other categories covered in the book include thrillers, serials, comedies, jungle movies, war films, adventure dramas, etc. Each movie is discussed in detail with full credits and comprehensive, supplementary information.< Less
