"MOVIE WESTERNS: Hollywood Films the Wild, Wild West" This mammoth, large-format book (271 pages)is absolutely jam-packed with information on some of my favorite westerns, both prestige "A" features from top studios and "B" entries from Poverty Row. Real western fans will enjoy actually reading this book from color cover to color cover, rather than merely skipping through the pages. It's good to see outstanding movies like Randolph Scott's "The Spoilers", "7th Cavalry" and "Riding Shotgun" featured alongside John Wayne's top movies (yes, he was in "The Spoilers" too) like "Red River" and "The Searchers". There are even a couple of worthwhile Abbott & Costello efforts such as "Rio Rita" and "Ride 'Em Cowboy". Plus a comprehensive list of "Zorro" movies and a complete filmography of Charles Starrett's extensive movie career, including not only his 132 westerns but... More > his 34 other genre pictures as well. As if this were not enough, there's also a year-by-year listing of the most popular western stars from 1936 through 1954 (when the poll was discontinued). Then there are the illustrations, mostly reproductions of original theatrical posters in the hands of hobbyist friends. (Two of them have since sold their collections for truly fabulous sums). All told, this book is not only a great "read", it's a treasure house of movie lore that will delight every western fan from Abilene to Zanzibar.< Less
