"The real King Solomon in all his glory!" Writing an historical novel centered around a famous Biblical figure, has its share of rewards and trials. On the one hand, the author is restrained from allowing his imagination to run wild; on the other, he feels it imperative to present his subject in an interesting new light. No-one will deny that the Bible perspective is narrow and constrained. The inspired authors of Kings and Chronicles were determined to present Solomon in as flattering a manner as possible. True, they did allow themselves a modicum of criticism, but even this was modified throughout the centuries by numerous editors and copyists who took a twin task upon themselves, namely to suppress as much deleterious information against Solomon as possible, yet at the same time to expunge many of the praiseworthy details about his rival, King Jeroboam. Even in its present modified form, to a 21st century reader of the Hebrew Old Testament, King Jeroboam emerges as as... More > much more sympathetic figure than the Bible writers imply. In the Greek version of the Old Testament, known as the Septuagint, the inspired authors have provided more details about Jeroboam which set him up as a man of principle, a man of virtue, a man of valor and honor. Nonetheless, I have tried to do justice to Solomon by presenting him, in his old age, as bitterly regretting the follies and rash judgments of his youth. This characterization, along with those of such supporting figures as Prince Rehoboam, the prophet, Ahijah, and the high priest, Azariah, is interwoven into a fast-moving, intriguing and suspensefully detailed mystery thriller with Solomon playing detective much as the young Daniel (of lions' den fame) did in that colorful Biblical story, "Susanna" (which you will find, newly translated, in my book, "Bible Wisdom for Modern Times: Selections from the Orthodox Old Testament").< Less
