"It's Not Just the Money, It's the Sense of Success! " One of the biggest thrills associated with winning a major prize in a literary contest, used to be the eventual publication (several months or even a year or so later) of your winning poem or story in a book anthology or magazine. Alas, with the growth of online publication, those days of holding a beautifully printed copy of your "baby" in your own hand (and urging all your friends and relatives to buy one for themselves -- or perhaps giving them all copies for Christmas presents) are gradually coming to an end. (Although a few contests like the Tom Howard Prize still provide this opportunity, most winners decline the offer). But it was great while it lasted! And whatever its virtues as a nostalgia piece, "Watching Time" offers a collection of outstanding stories and essays that will serve as ideal models of literary perfection for many years to come.
