In May of 1952, John Huber signed up for the Naval Aviation Cadet (NavCad) program at NAS Pensacola. The Korean War was going on, and rather than serve in the Army, he opted for the United States Navy. John J. Huber Jr., or ‘Junior’ as he was known back then, was from New Orleans, a 4 hour drive from Pensacola. For the next year and a half, he would be spending most of his time away from home, family and friends while focusing on his new big challenge. But probably an even bigger challenge was the time spent away from the love of his life, Gloria Rizzo. No matter what else was going on or where he was -- officer and flight training, studying for exams, flying cross country -- Junior wrote letters to Gloria to express his love, thoughts and feelings, how his day went, and to keep in touch. These letters also serve as a diary of what was going on during this critical and pivotal period in Junior’s life, and give a firsthand insight into what American life was like for this young adult in the early 1950’s.
