A nice bridge between season one and two with Maya as the focal point. Her attempts to fit in with the Alphans are not as smooth as we might expect and her sense of loneliness is well written. Unfortunately, she does display her Metamorphic ability in entirely the wrong way which makes Maya appear all the more alien and dangerous to those who observe the newcomer. It also does not help that Tony is initially very wary (and down right aggressive toward) of this new "alien" on the base. However, as we might expect, the animosity also hides a deep attraction. Maya's one true friend appears to be Helena who takes a sort of "give it time" attitude along with her words of wisdom. It is interesting to see Maya develop, show off her science skills and logic. And it's also lovely to see her read some of Professor Bergman's old journals, his take on their situation and his friends. His writings seem to give the Psychon woman strength -- as does the Commander's trust. When... More > Maya is asked to go with the landing party to a mysterious planet we sense her potential courage and tenacity. She obviously works well with others and is an asset to Alpha. I do wish there had been more interaction between the other major characters to go along with the mystery of the planet but, all and all, THE WHISPERING SEA is a truly good read.< Less

A highly enjoyable return to the SPACE: 1999 universe: the author bringing the two distinctly different seasons of the series together in an intriguing all-new tale, with the character of Maya being well developed. Recommended to all fans of the series.
