This is a finely drawn portrait of the Irish Travelers, their history and their current situation in America. The book is well-informed by both research and the author's personal experiences with Traveler groups, families and individuals. Mr. Stygles is artful in demonstrating the natural conflicts between Traveler ethos/tradition and the modern institutions of the Roman Catholic Church and American public education and public health. The author exposes no villains nor pleads for any victims, and this even-handed (yet still compassionate) approach convinces the reader of this book's objectivity.
