I became aware of "John Mosby's" (a nom de plume taken from a Confederate leader of a group of cavalry soldiers) via his blog, Mountain Guerrilla. The blog is great. It's obvious the "John" is the real deal and not only has the real world experience, but is widely read and quite intelligent. Thus it was a bit of a surprise when I got this book, which I greatly anticipated. It was obviously self-edited. There are multiple errors on every page. You can figure out what the word was supposed to be, but it's distracting. The layout of the book is pretty primitive in general. There are a number of inset text boxes throughout the book. The font in these is very small, like 8 or 9 and the words are crammed right up against the lines that denote the text box. Again, you can read it, it's just distracting. If the book was $15-$20 I'd say OK, I got what I paid for. But at $60.00 I shouldn't be dealing with amateur hour publishing. Many people take "John" to task for... More > his swearing. In general, I don't mind swearing, in the proper context, but here, it is just a bit much, once again, needlessly distracting, and it's laziness on "John's" part. Based on previous exchanges, I know he doesn't care what I think and he'd just tell me to go fuck off, which, in and of itself, tells you quite a bit. Now, as to the contents. "John" has a real world, take no prisoners outlook on carrying a pistol. I VERY MUCH like the term "Clandestine Carry". When I got my first carry license, back in 1988, I realized that I wouldn't know when I would need my pistol. So I made the decision that the only thing that made sense was to always carry. The pistol is within arm's reach while I'm sleeping. When I put my pants on, the pistol goes in the holster on the belt and stays there until I take my pants off for bed. I have often carried in Non Permissive Enviroments, knowing I was taking a chance, yet making a deliberate decision to do what I considered to be the right thing. "John" spends a bunch of time, (too much, really) on the philosphical aspects. I agree with everything he says, but it got a bit boring as it dragged on. (more evidence that it was self-edited) I've been studying, researching, learning, training, practicing, and teaching gunfighting for half a century. I've taught and been taught by, people all over the country, representing the best of what's available in the world. I find Very Little that I disagree with in this book. I just wish it had tighter editing.< Less

The book has been everything that I expected it to be. It's a good book that is straight forward, easy to follow, and not full of the pablum that infects many of these books. The price is a bit much for this honestly, but I feel that it's worth it to support this type of author. Whatever shipping issues lulu was having, it seems to have worked itself out. Ordered book 6/17/19. Shipped book 6/19/19. book arrived 6/22/19.

I ordered this book in November 2018. I am writing this review on 21 March 2019. I have yet to receive the book. I have contacted John numerous times about this. I have been told twice that a book would be put in the mail ASAP and next week. As of today I still have no book and John is no longer responding to my emails. I would recommend not buying any books from him. If I do eventually get a book I will read it and then post an unbiased review of it.

This is the best book/material on the topic I have seen to date. To give you some context, I have a (brief)background in LE and non-SOF military. That said, this book seems to be written as much to the benefit of LE/non-SOF crowd as to the general population. Mosby brings to light much of the nonsense running around the sheepdog/LE/etc crowd, and provides remedies when possible. Honestly, I was very leery about the price, since $60 seems fairly expensive for this type of book. However, when you get this book, you will realize that it is more like a combination manual/textbook/volume of experiences, than the numerous $10 "tactical" books on amazon. Mosby puts his recommendations in context by providing relevant stories and examples. I don't know Mosby personally and have no reason to plug his book, but after reading it I will be looking into his other books and training courses.
