More of a novel about modern art and artists than writers, even though a writer figures prominently in thwarting a certain influential art critic in his designs upon an unsuspecting artist whose girlfriend's suspicions were not without foundation, this is the first of three such art-related novels written by Mr O'Loughlin back in 1980, in the wake of his 'conversion' to transcendentalism with the volume of philosophical dialogues entitled 'The Transcendental Future', which left both dualism and Spenglerian pessimism in their progressive wake.

"THWARTED AMBITIONS" The ambitions that are thwarted in this novel by John O'Loughlin are less those of the artist, Robert Harding, than of his ostensible professional benefactor, Henry Grace, whose patronage and advice is not without strings or consequences. Although less successful on narrative terms than some of the author's other comic novels, this work is nonetheless sufficiently knowledgeable of art - and modern art most especially - and of what motivates its characters as to be an enjoyable read.
