This is the story of the men who went to War from Orpington. Most of the book is focused on the Great War and gives details of how Orpington contributed in various different ways to the war effort. For example, Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) hospitals were established to help with the treatment of wounded soldiers. War Shrines were set up outside local churches at All Saints and St Andrews in Orpington and St Pauls at Crofton. The names of the fallen were painted onto these shrines and you can imagine the sadness with which they were viewed by local people. After the war more permanent memorials were erected such as Orpington War Memorial. Smaller war memorials were placed in local schools and work places including the paper mills in St Mary Cray. Information is given about every Orpington man who died in the Great War - details include name, rank, number, regiment, residence, enlistment, family, date of death, age at death, cemetery or memorial. Several Orpington familes lost two... More > sons in the Great War and the Wallis family lost three sons. There are also the tragic stories of Lawson Smith who was shell shocked and committed suicide; and Albert Rodbourne who survived three years as a gunner on the Western Front, only to be accidentally killed shortly before the war ended. Also included are details of the war graves at All Saints Orpington of those men who died between the wars and in the Second World War. This book is a vital resource for local, family and military historians who want to know about Orpington at War in the twentieth century.< Less
