Feb 3, 2012This book records all of the Patemans whose births, marriages and deaths were registered from 1837 and also a number of Parish baptisms, marriages and burials. The book is arranged in date order by County. An analysis of the Pateman surname by county over the years enables us to determine the size and geographical spread of the Pateman family since 1837. The County with the most Pateman births is Hertfordshire (1010). The area with the most Pateman marriages (655) and deaths (691) is London. The other main areas for Pateman births, marriages and deaths are Bedfordshire (1038) and Middlesex (1032), followed by Northamptonshire (776), Leicestershire (700), Essex (684) and Kent (649). At the other end of the scale there were very few Pateman births, deaths and marriages in Shropshire (8), Herfordshire (4) and Westmoreland (2). The year in which the Pateman surname first appeared in the registration of births, deaths or marriages by county varies from 1837 (London, Hertfordshire,... More > Bedfordshire, Leicestershire, Essex, Kent, Yorkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire) to 1968 (Cornwall). The Pateman surname appeared in 10 counties (25%) in 1837 when the civil registration of births, marriages and deaths was made compulsory. There is a close co-relation between when the surname first appeared and the number of times it appeared. Seven of the counties where the surname first appreared in 1837 are also in the top nine counties with regards to how often the surname appears. Conversely, in those counties where the surname appears the least, there is a later date at which the surname first appears. The bottom five counties in terms of the number of Pateman surnames also have a start date for Pateman registrations ranging from 1894 to as late as 1968. The geographical spread of Pateman surnames is clustered around the southern and midland counties. The top area in Great Britain for the Pateman surname in 1881 and 1998 was Stevenage and the top postal town was Hitchin. Both of these towns are in Hertfordshire which is the county with the highest number of Pateman births (1010). It is not clear when or why the Pateman family settled and grew in Hertfordshire but it is likely that branches of the Pateman family then travelled to other areas in the south and midlands. This is illustrated by maps of England in 1881 and 1998 indicating the Pateman surname distribution at Royal Mail Area level. In 1881 the Pateman surname was found mostly in 15 midland and southern counties and in 6 London boroughs. By 1998 the Pateman surname had spread to over 40 counties, including some in the north and south west, and 7 London boroughs. The Pateman surname is almost 100% British / English with a few interesting variations such as Black African (0.12%), Indian (0.12) and Polish or Czech (0.24%). The Pateman surname appears in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, United States and Canada. The Pateman surname social demographic is ‘white van man’ according to the Mosaic social classification.< Less
