This short proto-gothic novel was sensation in its day, and it has spawned an vampire mythology and craze wordwide. Numerous books and plays have been produced based on or imitating its story line.
It was originally spuriously attributed to Lord Byron, but it was actually written by Dr. John William Polidori, a physician friend of Lord Byron. The main character of Ruthven however is reputedly based on Byron.
