Bereavement is a part of life that most of us will have to deal with some time. Joy and sadness, love and hate, life and death are as much a part of our lives as sunrise and sunset, summer and winter. All of life is a mystery which has provided fertile soil for poets, sages and writers since mankind discovered the art of recorded thought. This book records various experiences and reactions of people from very different backgrounds who have enjoyed the blessings and the curses which life throws up. It also portrays these people in the ordinary and extraordinary aspects of their lives. We cannot predict how we will respond to situations we have never experienced. One of the writers of this book was used to dealing with death in her medical practice. Her tragic story is told here exactly as it happened. The ugly and painful reality of losing my parents at the age of seven and several more loved family members since then has done nothing to soften the blow of losing loved ones. Memories... Dec 4, 2014Reading this book and thinking of its author, I got the strong feeling of being invited in to the deep and sometimes very dark places he has come through. As an octogenarian John Milne has not only lived a long life, he has also had a very active and productive one. Experiencing his fair share of sadness and heartache he revisits these significant times which have melded and awakened a sincere compassion and understanding of grief and loss to those who suffered the death of a loved one. This journey reveals the many faces of grief. Both parents and two year old sister all gone before he reached the age of eight years. The death of his three month old son Stephen and grandchildren, also a tribute to the life of his only brother who died recently. John is a Christian and has a peace about accepting the inevitability of farewelling a loved one even if the bereavement is untimely. Included in the book are the words of his adult son Chris who died three months ago. This is profound and... More > takes the reader into the torment of schizophrenia and brings an understanding of why and how the decision can be made to voluntarily terminate ones own life. John addresses his grief and expresses his love for Chris, a clear indication of how his faith in God has helped him to cope with this great loss. He includes his letter to a dear friend at the sudden death of his wife, his writing is sensitive and encouraging yet shows deep compassion for his friend. Also included is the tribute that this wonderful lady writes to her 14 year old son who took his life to escape the demons of mental illness. The resulting confusion and pain revealed a powerful bond of love between mother and son, yet in spite of the decision he made, his parents take solace from his life and an understanding of how he would have chosen to live. John himself then experiences this unique pain and is able to transcend the physical and gain a glimpse of the spiritual and eternal. Included are the experiences of others, one of whom is Rosie. Throughout the pages, one can sense the sadness, yet the celebration of meaningful well lived lives, sharing and finding purpose and joy. The author makes time to express love and appreciation for those significant people in his life who have made a difference. Though the subject matter is sombre and sadness is evident, beauty shines through and leaves the reader with a sense of what enduring faith in God can mean in the valleys and mountain tops of life’s journey.< Less
