Compared to its world-famous cousin in Granada, the Alcazaba which towers over the city of Almeria in south-east Spain is virtually unknown, but in some ways evokes a more realistic feeling of the past than does the Alhambra with its myriads of tourists. A huge Islamic fort, it is a reminder of when Spain was dominated by the Arabs, and when Almeria was one of the major ports of the Cordoban caliphate. It is an awe-inspiring, yet peaceful place, having formal gardens, ponds, and water 'staircases' which offer respite from the midday sun. There are fabulous views, including one over the still-inhabited Medina and, from the east end, of the fortified Cathedral which was used both as a place of worship and a place for the Almerians to take refuge from invading North African pirates. In times of war, the Alcazaba could hold an army of more than 20,000, but nowadays, you'll probably be one of perhaps 20-30 people there - significantly less than the Alhambra!
