Join me on my first tour of duty in the Navy - what went on in Boot camp, the schools I attended, what life was really like on board an aircraft carrier that was better known for fires than anything else! Come with me on a haze gray and underway misadventure on a guided missile destroyer that had trouble shooting its own missiles (let alone torpedoes) and all of the unimaginable things that happened to me...the people I met and what I witnessed in between. Telling things as they happened, it's a hilarious, serious, yet very straightforward look at life as a Radioman in the U.S. Navy during the Cold War period (1980-1984). So set the sea and anchor detail, it's time to hit the high seas!

Feb 15, 2010A Military Memoir Like No Other! THIS BOOK SHOULD BE IN EVERY SINGLE NAVY RECRUITING OFFICE!!!!! That's the best way to describe John Rudolph's book. You won't find the common pattern here where the writer talks about his medals or heroic deeds. This is the book that traditional publishers tend to miss out on! REAL LIFE IN THE NAVY, what it's like sleeping, eating, and living amongst thousands in the same predicament, and the social impact it has on the younger guys and gals who serve this country. So now I know what it's like eating navy food...and when these guys reach foreign ports, I also know what they're out looking for and it's not just women....it's finding ways to phone home to reach their loved ones back home. With the writer, he makes the sacrifices by leaving his girlfriend and family behind while he serves his duty. It doesn't get any more accurate than this. Don't pass up on this one. Seriously, I had a hard time putting this book down. It is well written and so full of... More > details that the book made me feel that I was right there. I'd even say this book is a MUST-READ for newbies desiring to go into the navy and work on ships and also for those who served!< Less
Dec 4, 2009Being former Navy myself it thrills me to death that someone captured the spirit of camaraderie we feel while keeping things light with a touch of hilariousness. The stories are absolutely priceless. Thank you for sharing your experience!
Oct 29, 2009Rudy (John Rudolph's) book covers a time when some of us weren't grown up yet (1980-1984). Although he served in the Navy for twenty years, he decided that this was the time of his entire career. Throughout the book there are very descriptive details on the interior and exterior of the ships he served on and what life was like onboard for sailors back then. In the book you’ll spend time with the author in the various ports (Naples, Benidorm, Alexandria) and meet some of the people he worked with. You’ll also spend time with him during his moments of solitude – whether it be on the forward starboard side catwalk, UHF II above the bridge, or just hanging around in CR Division’s crew lounge. How about some “hot dog stew” in the aft mess decks? You’ll also drink a few cold ones with Rudy as you both sit underneath the waist catapult launching area out on a sponson hardly anyone knew about as jets thunder over your head, and where you feel the jet blast in your face! But you’ll also tag... More > along with him and some of his lady friends, visit the infamous castle in Naples, and take tours up the side streets that were off limits. You get to earn degrees in foreign affairs and Sociology after reading this one, so enjoy this fantastic read!< Less
