"Authentic fiction" John Trelawny has written a novel that weaves fiction and fact to tell the story of a family from 1774 to 1841 and their lives on the Mewstone and Looe Islands, off the coast of Cornwall. It has an authentic feel and was obviously written by someone who knows both the local geography and the sea. The author inherited the Little Island next to Looe Island from the previous owners and his experience as ex Royal Navy officer and current boat owner explains the vivid nautical descriptions. He also did extensive research, documented in the postscript and documentation. Looe Island was used to store smuggled goods for years. Smuggling was a respected activity in Cornwall and leading local families, even the clergy, participated or cooperated. This is the story of how John Venning was transported to the Mewstone, how he eventually came to live on Looe Island and the subsequent trials and triumphs of generations of his family. This is the book to read on a... More > holiday in Cornwall. The account of the family is often moving and the descriptions of their way of life vivid. I've no reservations in recommending this novel.< Less

"The Islanders- Letter from Barry Sansome 8-1-08" "Page turning" becomes compulsive. The characters that you have woven your stories around have an "ordinariness" about them that takes them outside the world of fiction and sets them squarely before us today, as the "real people" that they might have been all those years ago. Their simplicity, their tragedy, their joy, their towering inner strength that is the essence of their survival against despair at what would seem insuperable odds, today.... has been recounted to us in such a way that we feel that the writer has known each individual, personally. He has met them, talked with them; he knows their language, the idiosyncrasies of their Cornish dialogue. They and their families have been so much part of his own life that, he has just decided to jot it down one afternoon in order to tell us about them.
