Life seemed quite straight forward for John Watters; finish school, do a degree and get a job. Then, one day, he read about a country with so much space that nuclear explosions occasionally take place in the middle of it and nobody really notices. Immediately, his adventurous soul had been released. Obtaining a job deep in the isolated Australian Bush, John attempts to explore the country from the inside out: first as a native, then as a tourist. From this perspective he is able to portray the real Australia with truly hilarious consequences before joining his fellow backpackers on a bus journey pilgrimage along the country’s eastern coast. With a heart-stopping skydive over The Great Barrier Reef, a close encounter with a crocodile, a humorous day out in the bizarre world of Aussie Rules football, and some of the most extravagantly exuberant characters on the planet providing a magnificent stage, Bonza Voyage truly captures the enchanting spirit of the long distant... Sep 16, 2009"An inspirational trip down memory lane! " Having travelled through Australia a few years ago and had a wonderful time, I was looking for a book which could portray the country I fell in love with. Having never read anything from John Watters before, I was excited to see what he could deliver. And believe me, it did not disappoint. This excellent account documents the author’s journey and opinions brilliantly (and hysterically!), but the most notable thing was how his observations matched my own so compellingly. From the bustle of the modern cities, to the natural beauty the country offers in hundreds of different forms, the author continually delivers fantastic insights, wonderful anecdotes and eccentrically colourful stories that perfectly represent the journey one can have in country full of splendidly blunt occupants. An amazing trip down memory lane and one which really has whet my appetite for another visit!
Aug 17, 2009"An Excellent Travel Book!" Although philosophical in parts, this book is generally an excellent light read! One of the great skills of British writers is being able to laugh at their own misfortune, and Watters demonstrates this quality with humourous perfection - I can pay the author no greater compliment. A fantastic book for arm-chair travellers and an excellent guide for those going on a gap year. A****
May 8, 2009"Funny, witty and informative A*****" Having decided to go on a gap year, I began searching for literature that could help me antcipate what was to come and I found none better than Bonza Voyage. Not only is it informative and inspirational, but these features are seemlessly combined with laugh-out-loud comedy. If you weren't a huge fan of Australia, you certainly will be after reading the author's epic account - a truly fantastic read and one that provokes the explorer within ones soul!
Nov 18, 2008"A Wonderful Journey" Having searched the internet for possible travel suggestions and exciting destinations, I came across Bonza Voyage. As I had not really considered Australia as a possible destination beforehand, I was slightly apprehensive, however, having read the author's epic account, I was positively brimming with admiration for the country! With a comprehensive, historical and somewhat funny review of the of the country's past, this book really sets the scene for a fantastic journey of exploration and self discovery. As the author moves from place to place, recalls funny stories from his travel experiences and describes the ambience with such defining detail, I felt myself going through the journey with him too. This is not just a travel book about an amazing country - it is a marvelous journey through a young man's life and one which develops into a beautiful friendship. Having finished the book, I got straight online and booked myself a trip Down Under. I just... Nov 5, 2008"This book is real "tour de force" in the travel/gap year book genre." Having been on a few travels myself I know the importance of having a guide. The difference with John's piece is that this is a much more personal account of all the highs and lows of life on the other side of the world mixed in with John's impeccable English humour. This book is a big piece of wit and a great read, very much out of the Bill Bryson mold. It makes me want to pack up and start another adventure.
