A Fulbright Journal: Five Months in Tianjin

ByJonathan Ochshorn

Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
There is no good reason for anyone, other than my family and me, to be interested in the contents of this book. It’s hardly clear why it was even written—as a compilation of daily entries combined with a kind of photo-journal—since the contradiction inherent in writing something of no interest to anyone else was well known to me at the outset of this project. In fact, I was tempted to fabricate more interesting content—turning it into a kind of murder-spy-sex-mystery intrigue set against the backdrop of a rising Chinese state and an unpredictable American president. Whether or how such a fantasy-journal would have been coordinated with my photo documentation I had not yet determined, but in the end, I abandoned that project entirely and stuck with the banal reality of my ordinary existence as a Fulbright Scholar residing for five months in the Chinese city of Tianjin, teaching at the Tianjin University School of Architecture for the fall 2016 semester.
