I found this to be a very intriguing beginning to what promises to be a gritty and gripping series. While it is a recognisably high fantasy backdrop, the treatment of the typical themes is novel and refreshing. I particularly enjoyed getting to know the characters. They were believable in their flaws, and I didn't feel like the central figures were infallible or over credited. Probably my favourite aspect of the writing was the fight scenes. So many writers romanticise a fight, but this authors treatment of them often made me feel as uncomfortable and sometimes exhilarated as if I was witnessing it first hand. While it is only an introduction to the world that left many unanswered questions, I thought it was a thoroughly enjoyable read.
