Jordan Kristine Zepher is a poet and a prophet for our times. There is nothing I could write that would do justice to the power of the words in her collection of poems How Roses Rupture Concrete. These poems render me more than speechless; they leave me breathless. Zepher voices deep lament and battle cries that arise from and speak to this political moment and the brutal history of race and class violence that has brought this moment into being. Perhaps because I have heard this poet perform, I feel the booming and vulnerable presence of her emotions in my own body. Yet it is more than that. It is my spirit resonating with her prophetic and tender truths. She combines the internal excavation and exposure of her own black woman’s soul with a visceral critique of “The Nation That Never Loved Me” and the “white blindfold” of lady justice that would snuff out her existence and the existence of black and brown bodies from Baltimore to Cleveland to Tulsa. She describes the ravaged terrains... More > of white supremacy and savage capitalism from to indigenous lands to Aleppo, from Palestine to Puerto Rico. This volume is part manifesto, part history book, part love letter to the resistors, part invocation of the ancestors. This book of poems feels like a resistance handbook for living with the “perpetual grief” of violence and the hardest kind of hope in which we still believe that “somehow, somewhere, someday we will be free.” She asks, “How does your soul stay soft?” in the midst of fighting daily for your life through rage, pain and depression. To those of us who “know better” than to believe in the racist lies and exploitation upon which this country was founded and perpetuates daily, she charges us to move beyond good intentions, idealistic fantasies, and self-serving intellectual arguments to be “united in a radically, intersectional revolution.” This is the kind of soulful truth-telling we need right now. I so highly recommend that you read this.< Less
