This is the story of the enduring and endearing pony Mr. Bowersox, as told by Mr. B himself (and translated by the insightful Jorg Huckabee-Mayfield). Mr. Bowersox is a real-life pony. In his lifetime he experienced love, comfort, warmth, thoughtlessness, neglect and abandonment. The journey starts with the fresh excitement of being a little girl’s first pony, thru the painful experience of being sold, taken from one household to the next, to being the subject of the perceived worthlessness of an aging horse. Mr. B’s downward spiral turned happily upward, but not all horses can tell the same story. I AM Mr. Bowersox is suitable for young readers but is a good book for parents who are contemplating the commitment of buying that first horse. The author clearly has a deep understanding of horse welfare and the issues surrounding it.

I Am Mr. Bowersox is a touching and educational story and an honest account of the uncertainties many horses face in their lifetimes. As Jorg Huckabee-Mayfield tells us of the trials of Mr. Bowersox, she raises critical questions about responsible horse ownership. It is an entertaining and enlightening testament to all of the equines that land in bad situations through no fault of their own and to the people, like Jorg, that save them.
