Oct 12, 2009"Fadul's Kites in History, in Teaching, & in Therapy " As a former president of the Kite Art Club of Viet Nam, and a freelance writer, it gives me pleasure to review Fadul's book on kites. I myself was a college teacher, formerly with the Hanoi Christian Academy where I integrated artistic kite making and kite flying in my history and literature classes. Let me start with the book's cover: it shows a pubescent girl's back flying an unattractive kite. I wonder why the author chose this picture for the front cover. I think the book's back cover where the author is shown flying a kite with a boy looking up (his son?) could have been the front cover. I'm happy to find three Vietnamese kites featured in postage stamps on page ix. The postage stamps featuring different kites from different countries are very artistic in arrangement. The section on history is not so comprehensive. There was no mention of the myths and legends from China regarding the origin or accidental... More > discovery of tethered flight. But Fadul is careful not to let pure speculation to taint his history. He is very honest in saying that he found "no employment of kites by the Filipinos during the Filipino-American War ... and the Second World War" in his country. Likewise, the section on teaching with kites is incomplete. The author could have visited Viet Nam last March 2009 when an international kite festival was held in my country and various ways to teach using kites were featured. In Viet Nam, kites are used in teaching engineering courses. The section on therapy surprised me, although I have long suspected that kite flying is therapeutic, calming the nerves. Further, the book mentioned about a dysfunctional family having kite making and kite flying activities as part of their therapy. Fadul could have focused more on the YouTube uploads made on kite activities and the results of his qualitative research. The book may have a limited audience: kite artisans and enthusiasts, but I cannot overstate its contributory value in conservation of the disappearing Asian art of kite-making and flying. --Victor L. Oct 10, 2009"Fadul on Kites in History, Teaching & Therapy" This is the book that I need to read before I die. The metaphors of kite flying are numerous. And they were presented in simple language that ordinary people can understand but deep enough for some philosophizing. For instance, we have but one sky and one earth, and anyone from any station in life may fly a kite; I need to have a strong frame if I expect to fly high. And of course, no kite is expected to fly forever. The pictures are very colorful and beautiful. So beautiful that if I die soon, I would like to be a kite in my other life. Reading the book in itself is therapeutic (a kind of bibliotherapy) and I wonder if the teacher-author realized this. Well, even writing this book must have been therapeutic for the him.
