An Exceptional Hound: Book II of the Ryland Creek Saga
“So you want to be a coon hunter?” Nathan asked gruffly. “Y-y-yes, sir, I do!” Jason stuttered. Nathan nodded. “Be at my house tomorrow night around sunset. Your parents know where I live. Wear some good boots and a warm coat—Painted Post won’t care how cold you get.” Thus begins twelve-year-old Jason Canton’s tutelage under the guidance of Nathan Ernst, with his legendary coonhound Seth and somewhat eccentric Uncle Arthur. Jason and his close friends, Bobby and Tara, soon learn the ways of the woods and life, following the call of the hounds in the darkened forests. But something powerful and not entirely of this world has brought malice to the woods of the rural Upstate New York town of Painted Post. This cunning menace will test the skills and courage of Nathan, Jason, and his friends. They must rely on one another to face this threat. They will need the strength of the bond between hunter and dog. They will require an... More > exceptional hound.< Less

Jun 5, 2019An Exceptional Hound is a heartwarming story of several generations, full of dynamic characters, a tinge of mysticism, and tense situations. It follows the hunt of a dangerous rogue bear with a taste for killing. I loved the interactions with the kids as they learned how to hunt raccoons. The teasing was spot on! Definitely worth a read.
Jun 4, 2019Once again, Mr. Crance has spun a wonderful, engaging tale around the lifestyle of coon hunting. A new menace threatens the idyllic forests of Upstate NY in Painted Post. Seth, an ebony coonhound, his master Nathan Ernst, Uncle Arthur, and a trio of pre-teens take us on a ride for an education in coon hunting and in life. Sprinkled throughout the book are words of wisdom woven seamlessly into the novel by an expert storyteller. These gems can apply to everyone, even if you never had, or never will set foot in the woods at night to chase the ringtail. Scar Paw will keep you turning the pages to see what he has in store next. The combination of lessons and threat makes this a very hard book to put down. With the help of an ethereal guide, numerous challenges will be faced. The most powerful part of this novel is the bond between the hunter and his hound. It will have you running the gamut of emotions that leaves you glad you came along for the journey. Well done! Jun 4, 2019Set in a small town in upstate New York, An Exceptional Hound is filled with unforgettable characters whose charm and heart will stay with you long after the last page. What begins as a light story of intergenerational bonds develops into a tale that will at turns make you laugh, make you cry, and fill you with fear. Nathan Ernst appears content in his isolation, though not happy, until the day he fulfills his role as a father figure in a family that has found him. An evil has come out of the hills of Painted Post and Nathan must do what it takes to protect those he loves. Luckily, he has the help of the king of hounds. An Exceptional Hound is the second in a fantastic series of books centered on the Ernst family, it works equally well as a stand alone novel. However, I highly recommend the first in the series, The Last Coon HunterThe Last Coon Hunter: Book I of the Ryland Creek Saga, as it’s there you’ll find the tale behind the extraordinary Ernst family and how their saga is...
