The Last Coon Hunter: Book I of the Ryland Creek Saga
It was a simpler time as widower Jacob Ernst struggles to raise his two young sons, Nathan and Mead, on their modest farm. They’ve grown up listening to the nighttime songs of hounds in the pursuit of the wily ringtail. Chasing raccoon through darkened hills, Jacob teaches his sons the legends of their hometown and a deep respect for all woodland creatures. Hunting and the lessons taught keep the Ernst family together. And the brothers bond with their dogs—loyal to one another until the end. For this is Painted Post—a storied place where the lessons of life, love, and death play out beneath its mighty oaks. But worlds collide. Evil follows the Ernst family and their hounds into these mystical hills. The scourge of the illegal drug trade, coupled with the treachery of one of their own, leads to an inevitable showdown. Some will learn that not all of Painted Post’s vivid tales are pure legend, and this rugged woodland will wield its own brutal justice. For in the... Jun 4, 2019As a girl growing up in Queens, NY, I never had any experience with coon hounds. My only pets were a set of hermit crabs and several prolific hamsters. Mr. Crance's book drew me into the unfamiliar world of hunting the ring-tail. His vivid descriptions of the lifestyle, the lessons gleaned from the forest and the love of the beloved dogs came through on every page. I found myself staying up late to "finish just one more chapter" again and again. This coming-of-age book delves with abundant clarity the protagonist Nathan's close relationship with his father, his younger brother, the sweet girl in his life, and of course, the hounds. I cry at movies easily. For a book to make me weep, it needs to work harder. The Last Coon Hunter had me reaching for the tissues several times. Teen angst, a bully, a bit of the unnatural and the unexpected complications of bad choices made by others, round out this interesting first book in the Ryland Creek Saga. Treed!
Jun 4, 2019What is the nature of the forest at night? Who lives there, and what walks among the shadows? Growing up in a small town in upstate New York very similar to Painted Post, where The Last Coon Hunter is set, I thought I knew the answer to these questions. I’ve spent a lot of time in the woods, even at night, though I’d never had any interest in hunting. Evenso, the narrative is so well-written you come to care for both the hunters and the hunted equally. The respect they have for each other elevates their relationship into something pretty special. All along you’re also learning woodcraft from an expert, such as animal tracks and behavior. However, the heart of this book is the Ernst family. You can’t help but care for them deeply as you discover their love, humor, and incredible determination. As you watch widower Jacob Ernst raise two amazing little boys into thoughtful young men possessed of astounding strength you’ll be reminded of the dizzying goodness in the world, made brighter... More > in the face of heartbreak. Even if you normally get through a touching story without shedding a tear, good luck with this one. If you usually need a few tissues, you’d better have a whole box handy. “It is Painted Post, after all,” is a joke, turned into a signal, turned into a clue, turned into legend. The answers to the questions at the beginning of this review are partly found in the way Crance layers in hints of a deeper mythology. The inextricably woven bond between the local folklore and the tragedies and triumphs of the Ernst family.< Less
